Living Generously, Sharing Faithfully

The Highways of Life

by Doug Bing, Washington Conference president

Did you know that a portion of the longest interstate highway is right here in the Washington Conference?

I-90 is 3,020 miles long and connects Seattle, Washington, with Boston, Massachusetts. Our current interstate highway system was started by the Federal-aid Highway Act of 1956 and was signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The bill created 41,000 miles of interstate highways that modernized our highway system and made travel for both commercial and pleasure much easier. It was also created to help our defense system to be able to move around the country with ease.

In the end over 46,000 miles of highway was built and it changed not only the landscape of our country but the habits of our society. Different sections of highway have been names for everything from war heroes to astronauts to governors to senators to other notable individuals.

Isaiah 35:8 speaks of another highway that has been created.

A highway shall be there, and a road. And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for others. Whoever walks the road, although a fool, shall not go astray.

This highway system was created by God long before there was even a need. The highway system was designed before the first human was created and it was for the ease of connecting God to His creation and it was also created for defense purposes.

The people on the highway may be looked at like they are fools following a God that died on a cross and following a God that they can’t see. The promise however is that no matter what someone calls them as long as they are on the highway they shall not go astray.

Being on this heavenly highway is the best place to be in our walk with God. It is the best defensive highway that there is.

It is the best highway for living a contented life in Jesus. There may be mountains to climb and hair pin turns to navigate but it is the highway that will get us to our heavenly home. Enjoy the journey on the Highway of Holiness.
