God Loves to Give Gifts

by Doug Bing, Washington Conference president

Just over a month ago families gathered around their living rooms and their Christmas trees and exchanged gifts.

For many it was done via video conference, but just the same, gifts were exchanged. Thank yous were expressed, new clothes tried on, toys played with, and gadgets assembled. It was a special moment and time of connecting and sharing with those we love.

Just like you love to give gifts, God loves to give gifts as well.

He gave us the gift of redemption from sin and assurance of eternal life as we accept his redemption for us. He also gave each of us gifts of the Holy Spirit.

In I Corinthians 12, Paul writes about those gifts. But the important thing to me is not the list of gifts that are given. It is that everyone receives gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Verse 4-6 states:

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

Several things to remember about God’s gift giving.

First, we all have a place in God’s family room when the gifts from God is given out. And what a great family it is with so many interesting and diverse people there in God’s family room.

Second, there is no one is left sitting in the family room of God empty handed. Isn’t that great news?!!! God has gifts for everyone!!

But the third things is the best part!

Notice verse 7:

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.

Did you catch that? When the gifts are given out from the Holy Spirit, they are not just for the individual that receives it. It is for the entire family of God living out God’s purpose on this earth. It is for the family living together in God’s living room. It is to benefit everyone in the family of God. It is also for the purpose of growing the family of God.

God has given you spiritual gifts.

Gifts that are to be remembered, cherished and used each day. Gifts that are to benefit those around you and point that to the Great Giver of gifts—God Himself.

Remember God’s gifts to you today and use them for His glory and for the benefit of those around you.
